Shallow Survey 2008 will focus on a shared dataset collected in the Portsmouth, NH area. The intent is to provide this dataset publicly well before the conference in the hope that papers at the conference will use the same data and therefore results will be comparable. The conference organizers have selected a particular area for survey, focusing on the outer harbor of Portsmouth, the mouth of the Piscataqua river and the immediate near-shore area. This is a highly dynamic area with mixed sand and rock seafloor, rock outcrops and navigationally significant features; it also overlaps with the survey area from Shallow Survey 2001, which focused on the inner harbor. The planned survey outline is available as an AutoCAD file, a MapInfo table and Arc Shape File.

Dataset Details

Below is a list of available data that will be updated as new data are added to the dataset; data from Shallow Survey 2001 are still available for comparison.

At present, the Common Dataset includes:

  • Satellite Imagery (Space Imaging Ikonos data) (TIFF)
  • Sediment description and grain size database (Excel)
  • Orthophotos (grayscale historical from 1992, GeoTIFF UTM19/NAD83; color low-altitude photography from 2000, GeoTIFF UTM19/WGS84)
  • Tidal predictions and zoning/modeling (intended to assist with planning)
  • NOAA raster charts (BSB)
  • Low-resolution bathymetry DTM from the 2001 survey (Fledermaus)
  • Water clarity

Data will be distributed on a portable hard drive, with all of the data from the dataset.

Data will be distributed in the format in which it is submitted, with as much metadata as is provided by the surveyors. We strongly encourage surveyors to provide data in a well documented open format with sufficient metadata to make such corrections as are required to reduce depths to chart datum, and backscatter to a uniform level.

A DVD of these data may be requested here immediately to assist in planning surveys. CCOM is ready to assist any conference participants in planning and scheduling surveys, and to provide local logistical support with survey operations. Please, contact us if we can be of assistance.

Resources Provided

Manufacturers are encouraged to bring their survey systems to Portsmouth and collect data in the survey area. CCOM will support collection of datasets through provision of survey vessels equipped with positioning systems, a motion sensor, rigid mounts and an A-frame. Details of the R/V Coastal Surveyor can be found on the CCOM website and information on the R/V Cocheco can be found by contacting Capt. Ben Smith. CCOM will also provide water level observations for the area of the survey on an ongoing basis, and can provide horizontal RTK control over known benchmarks if required

Other resources we will provide to collect the common dataset:

  • Auxiliary support
  • Navigation support
  • Tide support

Please see the CCOM/JHC resources page for details and contact information.
